NPTC and the British Turf & Landscape Irrigation Association (BTLIA) have been working together for over a year to produce a qualification that will enable users and managers to obtain the information that will enable them to operate their automatic irrigation systems more efficiently.
The Assessment
Knowledge to be assessed :
- Design principles including sprinkler selection and spacing
- Calculation of water application rates and water use
- Irrigation system component
- Water supplies and storage
- Pipework materials and connections techniques
- Basic system maintenance including seasonal operations
- BTLIA Minimum standards
Turf Maintenance Equipment

Turf Maintenance equipment covers a wide range of machinery including aerators, scarifiers and slitters all of which need skilful operators both on pedestrian controlled machines and tractor mounted equipment. This qualification is designed to assess the professional operator.
The qualification will also prove useful to local authorities, public utility companies, golf clubs and other employers in these sectors to demonstrate operator competence.
The Assessment
The assessment establishes that the candidate has the relevant knowledge and understanding as well as the appropriate skill required for the competent safe use of turf maintenance equipment.
The assessment is divided into three units:
Unit 1 - Pre-Start Safety
Unit 2 - Operate Pedestrian Controlled Turf Maintenance Equipment
Unit 3 - Operate Tractor Mounted Turf Maintenance Equipment
Candidates must successfully achieve:
Unit 1 which is compulsory and either
Unit 2 or Unit 3 which are optional
Safe Use of Mowers

The safe use of mowers requires competent operators. They must be able to drive accurately and manoeuvre the mower skilfully and safely. Additional requirements are that they are able to carry out routine maintenance and assess the condition of the grass and adjust the mower to achieve maximum efficiency of grass cutting.
This qualification will prove useful to local authorities, public utility companies, golf clubs and other employers in these sectors to demonstrate operator competence.
The Assessment
The assessment establishes that the candidate is competent in the correct and safe operation of a mower in a practical demonstration of ability.
Fork Lift Truck Operations

Fork lifts are a particularly useful item of equipment providing potentially substantial savings in time and effort required to load, unload and stack materials. They can make a major contribution to the logistics of storage and usage of space. They do however require to be operated with great care in untrained hands they can present a major hazard. The use of fork lifts requires competent operators.
Candidates for this Award must be sixteen years of age or more.
Certification
Certification will identify the classification of the fork lift used:
industrial Couterbalanced Fork Lift
- rough Terrain Mastered Fork Lift
- rough Terrain Telescopic Fork Lift
Tractor Driving

Tractors are the work horses' of the land-based industries. They are extremely versatile and capable of performing a range of operations in very varied circumstances. They do require however a high level of skill and technical expertise to operate them safely to a maximum efficiency. This demands that their drivers are skilled, competent operators with a very high level of knowledge and technical expertise and able to adapt to the demands of differing operations in a variety of circumstances.
The Assessment
The assessment is divided into four units.
Unit 1 Pre-Use Safety Tractors (compulsory)
Unit 2 Operate the tractor (compulsory)
Unit 3 Hitch trailer and three-point linkage implement to tractor (compulsory)
Unit 4 Operate a loader (optional)
Landscaping Plant Machinery

The Certificate of Competence aims to assess the operators of excavators and loaders to ensure that they reach the required standard in safe operation of this equipment and are aware of the legal requirements.
This qualification will also prove useful to local authorities, public utility companies and other employers in these sectors to demonstrate operator competence.
The Assessment
The assessment establishes that the candidate has the relevant knowledge and understanding as well as the appropriate skill required for the competent safe use of plant and machinery.
The assessment is divided into three units:
Unit 1 Pre-Use Safety Plant Machinery (Compulsory)
Unit 2 Operate a 180° or 360º Excavator (Optional)
Or Unit 3 Operate a Loader (Optional)
- Candidates must achieve all assessment activities in the appropriate units.
- Candidates who hold the NPTC Certificate of Competence in Tractor Driving and Related Operations Unit 4 is credited with Unit 3 of this qualification Operate a Loader.
Qualification Endorsement
The qualification will be endorsed either:
a) Plant Machine - 180º Excavator and/or
b) Plant Machine - 360º Excavator and/or
c) Plant Machine Loader
- Candidates seeking qualification endorsement a)' are required to successfully achieve Units 1 and 2.
- Candidates seeking qualification endorsement b)'are required to successfully achieve Units 1 and 2.
- Candidates seeking qualification endorsement c)' are required to successfully achieve Units 1 and 3.
Mobile Elevated Work Platforms

This qualification requires the operator to demonstrate, in a professional manner, the relevant competence and skill to successfully prepare, operate and maintain a mobile elevated work platform.
The Assessment
The assessment is divided into 3 compulsory units:
- Prepare the platform for operation
- Operate the platform
- Prepare the platform for transport
Candidates must successfully achieve all assessment activities in all three units.
Certificate Endorsement
The Certificate of Competence will be endorsed according to the category of MEWP in which the assessment was undertaken.
Endorsement will be either/or:
- Scissor lift
- Self propelled boom
- Vehicle mounted to 25m
- Trailer/Push around
- Insulated aerial device
- Vehicle mounted over 26m
- Mast climbing
- Vertical personnel platform
